The Bonkurasu Brigade

Blu-ray Animelo 2008 and May’n☆Act : Quick Preview

I’ll just make this quick, because I just had a marathon session at NK-DS’s dodgethis’ place. Approximately 10 hours straight of Animelo goodness. In full HD.

Point form preview after the cut.

(DISCLAMER : Arika fans may leave from this post, because I’ll delete non-constructive comments)

Animelo 2008 ~Challenge~

Day 1 – Disc 1:

    - Nana’s duet with Yukarin was quite cute, despite the hot-boiled fan I am.
    - Karen Girls reminds me of Perfume during their Hiroshima days.
    - yozuca, minorin and a-chan(from savage genius) ‘live’ cover of FictionJunction Feat YUUKA’s ‘nowhere’ from the anime ‘Madlax’ was beyond epic. Not to mention they imitated the way Perfume introduced themselves. (’ah’ desu! minorin desu! yozuca desu! sannin de 「or awasete」 ‘yamani girls’ desu!)
    - AKINO’s hair looks like crap. Her performance, on the other hand, was far from it.
    - Granrodeo was good. Bakayuki could sing well ‘live’.
    - Minami Kuribayashi looks like a dumpling in her costume. She’s better off wearing casual, and will end up looking way better than her current costume. Give me back my 2006 costumes to Minami, Makkun.
    - Suara was at her usual standard, despite being numb from nervousness.

Day 1 – Disc 2:

    - Minorin was HOT HOT HOT in her green gown, belting out Contact + Shijin no Tabi, Ameagari no Hana yo Sake, and Yuki, Muon, Madobe Nite.
    - Moe minorin dueting with a feverish Makkun, belting out Rinbu Revolution.
    - Makkun was still able to provide adequate vocals despite being ill, singing INSANITY.
    - ALI Project screwed Eternal Blaze up. Quite badly. Nana-chan’s face looked severely distressed over the Arika’s incompetence.

Day 2 :

    - Elisa was tall. And pretty. And young (youngest performer on Day 2). And sung pretty well for her EF songs.
    - Angela’s image SUCKED on Animelo 08. The feel of ‘Shangri-La’ from Soukyuu no Fafner was wrecked. Totally.
    - Hocchan gives another good example why her entire image is a skit.
    - FIRST LIA LIVE (that I ever watched) YESSSSSSSS
    - Yoshiki Fukuyama did splendidly for Makkana Chikai.
    - May’n on Animelo 08 = condensed version of her AFA08 performance.
    - Awesome Ishikawa Chiaki, as usual.
    - 4 man JAM Project was barely manageable without Makkun.

Overall Thoughts:

    - Comparing with ‘07, the costumes this year were generally better.
    - Blu-Ray with only 2.1 PCM? That totally sucked. Can’t help it though, since the sound system had loads of glitches on both days.
    - IM@S performance not included. But the making-of segments showed quite a bit of Chiaking, which I personally approve.

=====

May’n☆Act DVD:

    - Akikan Blitz = prolonged + enhanced version of the one she did at AFA08.
    - Teary speech at one particular MC segment before singing BLUE. *sob*
    - Nicer costumes, though the live band could be a -weeeeee- bit better.

Overall Thoughts:
Love all the camera angles, filters for the recording, and overall production quality of the LIVE. Can’t say much for the “making of” segment, since I didn’t get to watch it.

    I wasn’t at home when the Fedex guys came yesterday (good thing since I’m pretty busy), but I still remember those epic days pretty well.

    Just as what atsuko repeatedly said, they weren’t angela that night, so no “image” was ruined. Domestic Love Band was really entertaining, just like Kurobara Hozonkai. ;)

    What r u talkin’ about, ETERNAL BLAZE duet was awesome. :o

    @danie

    well in a sense, yeah.. but that version made me cringed, for Angela’s part.

    ..And for Eternal Blaze? Not when Nana-chan looks like a scared chicken silently mouthing the lyrics like a Buddhist mantra.

    @Xak
    Yeah, probably. I was typing that using adrenaline.

    I have to agree, Eternal Blaze was a let-down.

    When I first got the DVDs, I immediately proceeded to watch the performance of that song… which on hindsight was a very bad move.

    Arika’s timing was off, and she got the lyrics wrong in the second chorus (I don’t know if she had made any more mistakes lyrics-wise, my Japanese isn’t good enough). And yes, Nana did look a little worried too. It was such a pity; when Arika managed to get her lyrics and timing right they synced perfectly (as last year’s Animelo had shown).

    In her defense, Arika was quite apologetic about it after the performance. I believe she also apologised again in ‘The Making of Day 1′ segment , although my woefully inadequate Japanese prevented me from understanding much of it.

    I was hoping they would come together to perform Eternal Blaze again this year, perhaps out of respect for the fans who had paid to watch the concert. However, since Ali Project and Nana are currently scheduled to perform on different days, I suppose that’s impossible…

    @Firewind

    She slurred most of the lyrics. Her timing was off after the second chorus.

    Honestly, I think that was a preventive measure for them -not- to perform together, and I think Masami Okui was already pissed at the fact Arika wasn’t able to deliver. Hence performing Eternal Blaze again with Nana is like jumping into a hot spring that’s as hot as magma. Masami Okui knows that the legion of Nana fans in Japan might even cause Arika to quit singing, hence she play it safe and did countermeasures.

    … But that would mean my memory of Eternal Blaze would forever be scarred by that performance lol

    I believe Arika is able to give a wonderful performance of Eternal Blaze. Perhaps something happened that night that made her slip up. Nana fans are definitely not going to be happy with last year’s rendition of the song (I know I’m not), but perhaps they won’t be that eager to push Arika into a magma-hot onsen if she is able to produce a good performance of the song together with Nana. Of course, if she slips up again the consequences may be quite drastic, but I honestly don’t think she is such a terrible singer.

    What happened to Aya’s Unnamed World? She performed in the 31. Isn’t she on the DVD/BD this time?

    Could you share any impressions with us pleasE?

  11. sentinel011 April 2nd, 2009 8:42 pm

    @Khrno

    She is, but my impressions were similar to NKDS’s, yet her performance did not attract me, even though her vocals have improved.
